Lisa's Story
My story began at a very early age. My dad passed away when I was 22 months old. My parents had only been married for a year prior to my birth. He was twenty years older than my mother was and there was so much about him she did not know. As I got older, I had a constant desire to learn more about my dad, his life, what he was like, and what my grandparents were like? I began asking questions that my mother was unable to answer. On my thirteenth birthday, my mother gave me my dad's work identification badge. This was the first time I had ever seen a photo of my dad. Mother also shared with me that I had a brother from my dad’s previous marriage. After we had finished talking, I immediately grabbed the "Yellow Pages" and called everyone in the phone book with the same last name as mine. I was determined to locate my Brother and was successful. I did not realize it at the time, but I had been bitten by the genealogy bug! Through the years, I have spent countless hours searching for my ancestors, confirming family stories and gathering evidence. I have spent many hours and miles on rural back roads searching for those hidden cemeteries, visiting the sites of my ancestor’s homesteads and locating those remote county courthouses and repositories. This allowed me to obtain the next piece of evidence needed to break through some of my brick walls and to acquire the skills necessary to do the same for others.) |
